Aurora Weekly Update : Week 4

Hello once again on this dark and dreary Tuesday from the North West of the UK! The type of weather you’d rather NOT get out of bed for! Don’t worry as this hasn’t dampened our spirits and work is still progressing on Aurora!

Aurora Address Book

A new piece I’ve been working on is to ensure that we have a good list of Mirrors globally who can offer mirror links for the ISO’s and the REPO’s. A number of users have offered space on their servers and we appreciate this SO SO much! If you know of any school / university / science institute / etc who offer mirror services in your locale please let us know about them! We are collating a list of contact details to ensure we get maximum available mirrors pre-launch to ensure you all have a better experience!

Blogosphere

In a similar tone to the above we are also building contacts with a number of blog outlets and websites who are keen to get their hands on Aurora. If you are a blogger , or know a website who would be interested in featuring Aurora then please let us know! The team are happy to discuss as length any queries and bloggers have and discuss Aurora in detail.

Kernel Development

Kernel snapshots of the 35rc6 are being build and we are seeing some great advancements. For atom’s and celerons we are building the majority of needed devices directly into the kernel! This should improve support, performance and ease of use for Atom / Celeron Netbook users :D

Exogenesis Update

As Steve mentioned in a post this weekend we now have 2 other developers working on the Exogenesis installer – both volunteers from the Get Involved Section of the Forums. We really do want uses to step up and get hands on with the team!

A Sneak Peak

Bit of a shorter update as I don’t want to give away too many spoilers. ….. The the next week we will be introducing some interesting characters, brand information and a slight feature update to the site! Stay tuned for more news and some fun and interesting developments ……

    OK. I'll Wait. Thrill me! ;) :)

  • Andrew Winterburn

Any view on the timeline for the RC?

  • guitaraholic

Not at the moment! With the 2 new developers working on the installer it SHOULD pick up the pace for the development time – means we can get a beta 2 / RC out sooner then originally thought hopefully!

  • ubuwalker31

Don't forget to upload the .iso to a number of bittorrent sites!

  • guitaraholic

we have used linuxtracker and mininova tracker in the past so will make sure we get it on torrents!

  • litedani

When aurora os will be released?

  • Simmix

Waiting is killing me!!! Can't wait to get my hands on the new OS. So excited!

  • rusty815

you dont have to wait, you can install the beta that is currently out and if you keep it updated, you wont need to reinstall anything.

  • Blade

This entire thing is retarded. EEE users don't need or want a complete system with Firefox, Gimp, OpenOffice, and all the other bullshit that you're advertising as the most awesome thing ever. EEE users need a barebones system.

  • http://www.fewt.com/ Fewt

Tell that to our 10s of thousands of happy users. If it doesn't fit you, that's OK, go use something else. :D

By the way, just about every single person working on the Aurora core team has at least 1 Eee, most of us have multiple. All of the default selections work just fine, however there is a plan for some form of customization during install. Maybe you can join the forum, and make a thread on a custom installation for your (and perhaps others) specific needs.

  • rusty815

well with todays netbooks having 160GB+ storage capacity, a barebones system is no longer needed, but as fewt has said, our installer will be offering some way to customize your installation, thus you will be able to have a barebones system if you really want it.

  • guitaraholic

Glad to see you haven't read our site before commenting on our weekly update :P

We are not a EEE specific distro and now cater for ALL desktop, laptops and netbook users – there will be a way to choose what apps are installed by default when using the installer in the final release of Aurora.

This will also cater for specific customizations depending on what you install it on :)

  • SimLux

Oh, good to hear. Well, Beta is running – of course!!! Just waiting for the day that I can say: “Not a beta anymore. This is AURORA!” Not that the beta isn't, you know, but…
